Listed below is some information on and a list of the pests covered by our regular pest control service.
Argentine, Pharaoh, Fire, Little Black, Crazy, Carpenter, and Odorous house are several common types of ants found in our Southern California. All types of ant species forage for food ranging from sugars to proteins depending on the species. Most adult ants are incapable of digesting solid foods and so while they may be seen stealing small sugary particles, this food is only to be taken back to the nest and fed to the larva, the larva will then digest the food and regurgitate it in liquid form, making it edible for the adult ants. Because ants are so dependant on liquid food, they will very often be found feeding on the liquid output of aphids and in many cases have even been observed cultivating aphids much the same way we do cattle. Aphid attracting plants will almost always lead to ants if untreated.

Spiders are perhaps the second most commonly complained about pest in the home following only ants. While spiders are beneficial to our environment due to their eliminating many unwanted insects they can also inflict damage both to man by biting and causing possible allergic reactions and illness and to home with their annoying construction of webs in corners, cabinets, and even doorways. The best way to control spiders is to control their insect food source. While methods are available and often employed for controlling spiders directly, controlling the introduction of spiders is nearly impossible and maintenance is key. Part of a regular pest control service includes the dusting and knockdown of spider webs around the high profile areas of your home. If you are having particular concerns about the spiders in your home please ask your technician or call us at the office for any additional information.

Many moths will be associated with the storage of clothing. Clothing hanging in closets, not worn and consequently not washed very often will accumulate moth infestations which can grow in number if left undisturbed. Other common types of moths would include stored food moths. In most cases of both types, the main identifying factor, besides the citing of the moths themselves will be the webbing left behind by these invaders. Moths are generally found inside homes and can be effectively eliminated with the cooperation of cleaning, removal and sealing of stored foods and proper pest control treatments.

There are a variety of cockroaches present in our area. They tend to have different habits, and areas they are found. Cockroaches are a primitive pest having changed very little in 400 million years. They typically invade kitchens, bathrooms, sinks, garages, appliances, and just about any other warm or humid area you can think of. Cockroaches are not communal but breed quickly and may be found in large numbers in concentrated areas. The four most common cockroaches found in mans dwelling places are the German, Oriental, American, and Brown Banded. Methods of treating for cockroaches are well developed and relatively easy, however the most important treatment will always be to identify and eliminate their food source.

Perhaps the most primitive pest on this list, Silverfish have existed for millions of years unchanged. Silverfish get their name from the silver tint of their tear shaped body. They may be found in a variety of places including wall voids, sub-floors, and attics. They require a high degree of temperature and humidity to live and breed and often found in warmer areas. Silverfish have the ability to digest cellulose and will often be found digesting paper, cardboard, and wall paper paste. They are generally controlled by dusting the voids in which they are living.

Paper wasps are the most common wasp and generally build their nest on the bottom side of the eaves, soffits and other unprotected areas. When eliminating a paper wasp nest it is important to kill all of the adult wasps or they will quickly rebuild. Mud Daubers and Hornets are also common wasps to be found in our local. All are relatively nonaggressive unless disturbed or provoked. Hornets may be found burrowing in soft soil and mud daubers will attach mud nests to the sides of homes and occasionally inside wall voids as well.
back to top Ticks
There are many species of ticks located in the Western United States. Although not a structural pest, ticks can cause problems when introduced to the home via rodents or domesticated animals. Ticks can also gain access to the home and to a human host, if the grass is long and unkempt. Ticks cause the greatest amount of damage when they seek a human as host for a blood meal. Such meals can result in a variety of diseases for the host. Regular pest control will help to control the spread of any ticks introduced to your yard by providing an unsuitable habitat for the tick to breed.
back to top Fleas
Fleas are one of the more important pests described in any part of the world. The Flea's ability to spread diseases such as the plague has made it a major player in world history. The most common type of flea is the cat flea. Fleas are generally introduced to the home through a domesticated pet. If left undisturbed to breed, fleas will lay eggs in the fibers of carpet, upholstery, rugs, bedding or linens and grow at a phenomenal rate. Fleas can also lay eggs successfully in the slats of hardwood flooring and in certain conditions in landscaping. Often times a seemingly manageable flea problem will be left for two weeks while the home owners go on vacation. Upon returning home the problem will have gone from manageable to devastating. Don't give fleas a chance to grow; they'll take you up on it every time.

Crickets are primarily nocturnal and are not a major structural pest in our area. Crickets are generally known for being a nuisance in two ways, 1: they will eat at fabrics and clothing causing small rough patches and sometimes holes. This would require a pretty serious infestation. More commonly in our area is heard the complaint of the crickets chirp. While many people love the song of the cricket, some find it only creates insomnia. Crickets are easily controlled with a general insecticide treatment on a regular basis.

Earwigs eat plants and dying insect material. They are nocturnal and will be found hiding in moist shady areas throughout the daytime. Because of their habits and feeding requirements, earwigs are primarily garden pests. They will be quite well controlled through a regular exterior pest treatment.

Bed bugs were at one time all but eliminated from the North American Continent. A recent emergence of bedbugs has raised some reason for alarm on the east coast of the U.S. and cases have been reported here as well. Signs of bedbugs will generally include a sweet smell in the infested room and blood spots on your bed sheets. Most recent cases have been restricted to hotels. While we do treat for bed bugs, it is an extensive treatment and is the only pest listed on this page which is not included in our regular pest control service.

Southern California is widely known for the natural climate and growing conditions which make it one of the most abundant agricultural regions in the world.
Man, beast, plant and pest have flourished together for thousands of years. As the United States began to expand its vast borders to include this most south westerly region, the nations citizens flocked to California in search of among other things perpetual spring and soil so rich it would grow super crops. Whether or not the promised turned out to be true, one thing is for sure, the population California grew immensely, and fast. While the sudden change in environment would be deadly to some species of pest in our area, the opposite was true of the majority. Pests and insects especially thrived with the arrival of civilization and industry; some as parasites seeking a host, others taking advantage of the varient of environmental conditions which would change. With man came communities, water, food, new plant species, domesticated pets, shelter, commensal rodents, agriculture, unclassified pests, sewers, linens, stored grains, and a host of other conditions- in fact almost too many to number. Indigenous pests thrived. New pests were introduced which would adapt quickly and thrive in the ideal conditions.
Pest control soon became a necessary service in order to control the unprecedented growth of insects and rodents which plague man. While the pest control service is vast in Southern California, spraying chemical alone is not the answer to adequately controlling our pest problems. Also necessary is the understanding of the pest, its behavior, environment, and conditions which cause it to thrive, and the different methods of controlling such behavior. Pro Pacific Pest Control is dedicated to training our technicians to understand such problems and address them both in an effective and responsible manor. It is our goal not only to provide excellent service at an affordable rate. If you are experiencing pest problems and are interested in receiving a free estimate, please contact us.
